Innovator Spotlight: Rekosistem

Aim

Rekosistem founders consider mismanagement as the root cause of the waste problem in Indonesia. As a cleantech startup for waste management, Rekosistem was built to improve

the productivity of the waste value chain using a decentralized approach, with the end goal of minimizing waste to landfill.

Solution

Rekosistem connects waste to the recycling chain by using digital technology. A mobile app that they developed provides incentives for people who sort and deposit waste at several drop points across Jakarta, Surabaya, and Purwokerto. Rekosistem also provides waste collection services for residential areas, offices and businesses. The collected waste will be processed in the Rekosistem Waste Hub and will be sent to recycling partners.

To increase scalability and expand their operations, Rekosistem participated in the Informal Plastic Collection Innovation Challenge and Surabaya Access Pad programs.

Result

Through the Informal Plastic Collection Innovation Challenge program, Rekosistem became connected with various stakeholders in the waste sector. This led to partnerships with four new stakeholders, including two in Surabaya. Collected waste in Surabaya will be sent to the Surabaya Central Waste Bank and Robries for further processing and recycling. Rekosistem have utilized a grant from the program to further implement the partnership.
